Foundation Dentistry

What is Foundation Dentistry ?

When new graduates qualify, they have the option of joining a nationally accredited dental practice which has been quality assured by the local Deanery.  Antwerp House, including Dr.Preeti Bose, and Raj Wadhwani are accredited as Trainers  to coach and mentor new dentists, known as Foundation Dentists (FDs). The training framework is known as Dental Foundation Training (DFT).

The DFT training framework seeks to accomplish the following :

  • introduces a young graduate dentist to a general dental practice
  • a planned programme of training, mentoring and coaching identifies strengths, weaknesses and further training needs for the young graduate
  • provide facilitated training to enable the FD continue to develop his/her skills without financial pressure
  • promote and facilitate self and peer-review
  • foster a culture of critical analysis, self evaluation,  peer review and life long learning as tenets of the ethical, committed and excellent dentist

The benefits of Dental Foundation Training for patients  is that the Foundation Dentist enters a financially protected environment which enables them to work at their own pace and provide patients with optimum outcomes.

Why does Antwerp Dental Group support Dental Foundation Training ?

Dental Foundation Training offers a framework to enable the young graduates to excel. As part of this process there is a great owness on the practice to develop support structures and systems not only for the Foundation Dentist, but also for other new recruits, trainee dental nurses. DFT fosters a culture of intra-practice communication and appointment as a training practice is in itself a benchmark of quality.

All DFT trainers  receive additional training in being Educational Supervisors, in devising meaningful lesson plans, and in considering the needs and learning styles of the audience in all educational endeavours. Educational supervisors have much opportunity to peer review best practice and improve structures and systems within their own practices.

In short, DFT practices are generally extol all of the virtues which are necessary for excellent patient care through critical analysis, self-audit,  peer review and life-long learning which are some of the values that we hold dear within Antwerp Dental Group.

Antwerp House Dentistry

Antwerp House Dentistry opened its doors for the first time in 1999, offering a mix of NHS, and Private Dentistry, including advanced and specialist care. Antwerp House chose to become involved with Foundation Dentistry Training and has  now done so  for over a decade, having successfully  graduated several Foundation Dentists.

In 2017, we were awarded the Customer Service Excellence Standard, which is government standard with several criteria to attain  customer service excellence recognition. The criteria involved measurement of of 5 key “customer centric” standards around :

In the same year the practice were also awarded the “Princess Royal Training Award” alongside BAE Systems, Mercedes-Benz and RBS. This standard honours employers who have created outstanding training and skills development programmes.

We have a dedicated teaching facility which is routinely used to facilitate training for dentists, hygienists,  dental wnurses and Front of House Professionals. The practice is following the Investors in People business development process to drive the effectiveness of the business forward.

Antwerp House itself is a large Edwardian House located near the centre of Cambridge with greater than 30 rooms used for various aspects of dentistry, including an on site laboratory. The practice opened in 1999 and was the first practice of what is now a group of 6 practices within Antwerp  Dental Group. In 2010, the practice underwent a major refurbishment to a very high specification with view to bringing the latest technology to clinical practice for the benefit of its many loyal patients.

Antwerp House has a fully operating decontamination room, built  to HTM-0105 standards and the team are continually striving towards best practice with the use of facilities such as a washer dis-infector. The practice has an outstanding cross-infection control culture and we are constantly updating our knowledge with in-house and external training.

During their time with us, our Foundation Dentists are introduced to all aspects of dentistry to make them effective, evidence based clinicians.

Raj and Preeti are always there to lead, supervise and guide when necessary with the help of experienced dental nurses who know practice systems and policies.

The practice has  a friendly and open culture with a responsive team , and this is one of the hallmarks of a successful Foundation Training year and is a key to a successful career in dentistry.
